Bill Ayers on Arne Duncan
I referred earlier to the fact that Obama should not be judged by those he associates with. That in large had to do with Bill Ayers. Now, despite the stupid, inflammatory rhetoric posed by would-be detractors, I’ve found Ayers to be a bit confounding at times for sure, but usually very thoughtful, and usually very challenging in profound and meaningful ways.
Many of the thoughts I was trying to communicate on this blog yesterday he says here more economically and with much more power, force and experience. He also talks about bringing about real change. And, yes, he is correct, it won’t come through elected officials but through communities banding together and rising up to challenge inequities. (Today’s caveat: Although I’ve never been a student of Mr. Ayers [I was enrolled in University of Illinois at Chicago’s education classes as an undergrad. Ayers teaches at the grad school level], some of my favorite profs were. Also, anyone interested should check out Teaching Towards Freedom, his manifesto on why and how our children should be educated).
In short, though I know some people feared (or tried to scare us into thinking) that Obama would listen to Ayers, in cases such as education at least, I really wish he would.
